Building Your Child's Self-Esteem

Canadian Paediatric Society

Parents and caregivers play an important role in their child's developing self-esteem. Self-esteem is how people feel about themselves and their perception of their worth and value. People with good self-esteem generally have a positive self-image. They accept themselves, feel confident and have healthy self-respect. Various factors influence self-esteem, including personal experiences, social interactions, cultural influences, and individual characteristics. Positive experiences, supportive relationships, and a nurturing environment can contribute to developing healthy self-esteem, while negative experiences, criticism, and neglect can erode it.
